Master David Schmitt visited the Law Enforcement Class at the AVC and taught one of the most valuable lessons a future officer of law enforcement can receive, self defense, awareness and what it takes to stay alive in a dangerous situation.
"You must be in control of the situation at all times, and more important, never let the suspect think you're not" Master Schmitt warned. If the suspect senses vulnerability, it is then when he will become uncooperative, resist arrest, or worse yet, attack you. You must be aware of your surroundings at all times, assess the risk and make swift deliberate moves to take the suspect into custody.
.
The students were taught several self defense techniques to practice and keep in their personal arsenal should a situation arise where they are needed. Sizing up your opponent, knowing your own abilities and limitations and understanding how a body will conform or react to different pressure points and joint locks is half the battle. Putting it into action takes practice and quick thinking.....but it can ultimately save your life.
