Health Occupations Instructor Teaches Handwashing
by Karen Koester
October 28, 2006
Mrs. Karen Koester, AVC Health instructor, presented a program about hand washing and using sanitizer gel to Mrs. Elliott's first grade class at River Ridge elementary school. Mrs. Koester started the program by handing out candy that had a special disclosing powder on it and explaining that the upcoming season is the time of year that many students will catch the cold and flu germs. The class answered questions about the places that the germs might be found and when to wash their hands. Mrs. Koester read a story about using the gel when soap and water are not available. The class had a review of the steps in the hand washing procedure that where outlined in a coloring book handout given by Mrs. Koester. Then Mrs. Koester had the lights dimmed and showed the students using a black light
all the places that germs might be found if they were on the candy that the children had received. The children then washed their hands using the appropriate techniques and they had their hands rechecked. The class ended with the students enjoying the candy and thanked Mrs. Koester for the candy and coloring books.
