Another Year of Graphics is Under Way
September 22, 2008
Another year of graphics is under way here at the AVC. I would like to take a moment to introduce myself, Mrs. Irene Thraen-Borowski, as the new graphics instructor. I am thrilled to be part of the AVC and look forward to a very successful school year.
The school year is under way and the students are hard at work. Projects range from logo design to sculpture to board game creation to self-portraits and everything in between. The students are learning various computer programs and addressing weekly thought-provoking questions relevant to art in their sketchbooks.
Happenings:
I recently met with Highland Community College to solidify a standing partnership that is a great opportunity for the Graphics students. Any student that takes two years of Graphics Communications and develops the needed skills earns college credit for this course. If a student enrolls into the graphic design program at HCC and have met the requirements, they will enter in at the graphic design II course level, as opposed to graphic design I. Students will have to demonstrate proof of learned knowledge through additional assignments, their art projects, added readings, and approval from instructors in order to qualify for this college credit.
Additionally, any and all Graphics students will have the opportunity to submit work for an exhibit at the art gallery at Highland Community College in Freeport in the spring.
I recently visited the Design Mill in Elizabeth, IL and they are eager to partner with the Graphics Communications program in ways that may include, field trips, guest speakers, possible internships, software updates, securing additional software, and an overall exposure to more careers in the field of art for the students. I look forward to where this partnership will take the students.
Additionally, I joined the Galena Cultural Arts Alliance to learn more about local artists and programs being offered in the area. I am hopeful that this will provide year round opportunities for the students and increase the program's visibility.
I am always looking for ways to enhance the classroom experience, so if anyone knows of other community events, artists, or organizations that would be a good fit, please contact me.
Lastly, many of the seniors are embarking on the exciting and potentially stressful task of applying to college. During class, we often perform research, hold discussions, re-read entrance essays, go over portfolios, and share information on this process. It is very rewarding now that the student’s acceptance letters are starting to roll in.
I will be posting pictures of student work and achievements throughout the year, so check back regularly.
