TRAFFIC STOP TRAINING
On September 8 & 9, 2008, the students of the Law Enforcement class took full advantage of the good weather and conducted traffic stop training in the AVC parking lot. Using AVC vehicles as patrol cars, and rubber guns and knives, the students were trained in responding to a variety of life threatening traffic stop scenarios.
Apparently, despite the bright orange color on the training props, passers by and motorist stopped and watched not knowing what to make of all the activity. "One motorist actually pulled over to the side of HWY 20 and watched for about 15 minutes" said training instructor, Mrs. Speaker. "I thought the local police department may get a call, but realized Chief Toot would know exactly what was going on".
The students seemed to really enjoy the training. They continued to come up with potential scenarios, "what-ifs" if you will. Mrs. Speaker was satisfied to see them make safer and wiser decisions on their feet with each new scenario, showing the training was effective at teaching them to think on their feet quickly, safely and never losing sight of the mission at hand.
