Graphics Student Designs Sign For Stockton Heritage Museum

May 20, 2009

For the last few months, the graphics students have been working on design ideas to commemorate the original Kraft cheese plant in Stockton, Illinois.  Recently, Nicole Schwoob's design was selected as the winner.  Her design will be made into a large sign and placed on the historic site in Stockton in the fall of 2009.

"This was an excellent opportunity and I couldn't be more thrilled with how it all turned out", states graphics instructor Irene Thraen-Borowski.  "I was contacted by the Stockton Heritage Museum some time ago with this idea and it seemed like a perfect fit.  It gave my students the real life experience of trying to fill a client's needs.  They had to research the history, the images, and learn what design qualities go into making a strong sign.  It was also crucial that they listen to their client's needs and were able to meet a deadline.  In the end, there were a lot of strong designs and I was glad I did not have to decide the winner."

Both Irene Thraen-Borowski and Nicole Schwoob attended the Stockton Heritage Museum meeting Tuesday May 19 to unveil the winning design and answer any questions.  Thraen-Borowski stated, "I strongly believe that these types of partnerships (between the classroom and the community) are what the AVC is all about.  It's wonderful to see the communities support the education of their youth and in turn, witness the youth get involved in their communities"

Nicole Schwoob is a senior at Warren High School and will be attending Highland Community College in the fall to pursue a degree in graphic design.
