Course: Graphic Communications I

Course Description:
This program provides theory and studio work related to the design and execution of illustrations, and artwork for display, publication and other commercial and personal purposes. This program will allow the student to find and develop their visual voice. Instruction includes the development of critical thinking skills, the elements and principles of design, computer imaging used to create illustrations, package and product design, photography and some video production.

Text and Supplemental Materials Used:  Graphic Design Basics, amy e. arntson; various current events news articles, field trips, guest speakers, muti-modal presentations/technologies, local artists’ work, etc.

Outcomes:

Outcome 1: Develop Art Awareness

Competencies: the successful student will be able to:
1. Use art vocabulary within the proper context
2. Develop a basic knowledge base of diverse artists and their movements
3. Make connections between artmaking and societies
4. Address weekly sketchbook questions showing evidence of building critical thinking skills

Assessment: project based activities, sketchbook, group discussions/activities, critiques  

Outcome 2: Identify and Apply Basic Occupational Skills
Competencies: The successful student will be able to:
1.   Be efficient, organized and careful with tools
2. Apply human relation skills
3. Apply communication and leadership skills
4. Identify types of art materials
5. Identify digital tools and techniques
6. Maintain presentational portfolio
7. Demonstrate basic computer and graphic skills
8. Demonstrate ability to meet deadlines

Assessment:  Project Based activities. Performance based and Portfolio Review

Outcome 3: Identify and Apply Basic Design Skills

Competencies: The successful student will be able to:
1. Identify fundamentals of design
2. Use and apply color concepts
3. Render two and three dimensional shapes
4. Demonstrate observational drawing
5. Use specific drawing and painting techniques
6. Use stock art (ready art)
7. Use computer drawing and painting tools
8. Use image scanning tools
9. Appropriately select and arrange type styles
10. Import and manipulate images of different file formats.

Assessment:  Project based, Performance based. Portfolio Review
   

Outcome 4: Communication

Competencies: The successful student will
1. Develop a technological awareness and solid skill set specific to computer and digital programs
2. Exhibit the ability to problem solve
3. Participate in critiques and develop aesthetic awareness
4. Complete a variety of graphic based projects in the areas of illustration, storyboarding, logo creation, product development, and digital production

Assessment:  Project based, Performance based. Portfolio Review

Objective 5: Communicating on the job

Competencies: The successful student will be able to:
1. Communicate orally with others
2. Interpret the use of body language
3. Prepare written communication
4. Follow written directions
5. Ask questions about tasks
Assessment:  Project Based, Presentation, Group work and Portfolio Review

Outcome 6: Maintaining Professionalism

Competencies: The successful student will be able to:
1. Identify work-related terminology
2. Identify how to treat people with respect

Assessment:  Project and Performance Based

Course Structure: Lecture, Demonstrations, Studio work, Guest Speakers, Community Activities,  and Project based activities

Method of Instruction:  Cooperative Learning, Technology, Reciprocal Teaching, Self-Regulated Learning, Critique, One-on-One Assistance, Multi-Sensory Learning, Critique,  Differentiated Instruction

Method of Evaluation:  Portfolio and Sketchbook Reviews at the close of each quarter.  (all portfolios are done digitally)
