Jo Daviess County Probation Officers Conduct a "Drop-in"

By Kathleen Speaker
September 01, 2006

But this was no random drop-in. This was a scheduled presentation for the Law Enforcement Class at the AVC.  Tuesday morning Kim Montgomery (juvenile probation) and Sharon Gillip (adult probation) engaged our class with an informative presentation on the day to day duties of a probation officer, their perspective academic and professional experience that qualified them to hold these positions and the philosophies and goals of their department that they believe are essential to the success of community corrections.

Sharon brought along an electronic monitoring device that sounds off an alarm when an offender/probationer is out of range.  "It is a very useful tool for monitoring house arrest" Sharon said.

Kim shared with the class that her goal was to develop a corrective behavior plan that includes both the juvenile and the parents in an effort to "Prevent juveniles from developing a court record". This generated nods of approval from the class.

After a few questions from those students whose future employment goals are in the field of probation, and an appreciative round of applause, Kim and Sharon left with the class hoping they conduct another drop-in on the Law Enforcement Class again next year!
